Hey,
It's my birthday week. A milestone one.

I love having flowers around... I think a good arrangement is a work of art. I was intrigued by the idea of arranging them for years before I finally took a class.
Most of that class wasn't arranging at all. It was a basic education in the materials: how to think about what you're working with. The rule of arranging that I still mutter to myself when I'm working on an arrangement: Flowers are for flowers, greens are for greens.
When a flower goes into an arrangement, you strip off every one of its leaves. 🤯
I had been operating on the opposite premise - that I needed to keep everything that came on the stem. (oooh boy... this could really roll over into being a larger life thesis... but anyhow...)
The arrangement I made in class was beautiful. It still took a couple more classes before I was brave enough to try one at home... and before I could let go of it needing to be perfect while I'm still building the skill. (Creative acts are a lot less fun when striving for something that doesn't exist, like perfection.)
My core learning: skills that look intuitive still run on basics and practice. And the more experience you have (cough - years on the planet - cough), the easier it is to skip the class and assume you can wing the fundamentals of something new.

Experiment for the week: Take the class. Pick the skill you've been circling and find the 101 version... a class, a workshop, a real beginner's seat. Let it be imperfect. That's really the point (and... might be the most challenging part).
Now the birthday part, I'm giving one of you a gift! I put together a party bag with brand goodies and some just-fun things. To enter, click here and answer one question:
Think of the last time you had to go digging (through emails, texts, meeting notes) to prove what someone actually agreed to. What were you trying to prove, and what did it cost you?
Entries close Sunday night (August 23). Winner announced next week.
If you're anywhere near Phoenix: BuildHERS is next Wednesday, August 26, and I'm a department host. Come find me, and bring someone (these events are always a great time).
Hit reply if the flower thing is relatable... I want to know what you've been circling. |
