FOR LUXURY DESIGN BUSINESSES ON THE RISE

Remember the Montana drive and the podcast binge friend?

Weeks later I'm still thinking about the episode: "Time Scarcity, Asking Questions, and Pocket Presence".

In it, Brené recounts when a brand new member of her team asked for clarification on a request using the 5 C's, the framework Brené's company uses for clear communication & delegating:

  • Context: why this matters now... the situation and constraints

  • Color: what "done" looks like, with the detail, tone, and specifics

  • Connective Tissue: how it ties to other work, dependencies, or systems

  • Cost: what you're investing... time, money, attention, opportunity

  • Consequence: what happens if you do it, or don't

Brené credits these kinds of processes & skills for their team's ability to have pocket presence: thinking and acting wisely in the moment, under pressure (it is a football reference, because of course it is). Adam frames it as a capability a whole team can build together, not just a personal skill.

My addition: the 5 C's work on more than people.

Delegating to your AI tool of choice (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot... doesn't matter) fails in the same places human handoffs fail: missing Context, missing Color. You got back what you said, not what you meant. If you record your meetings, most of your Context and Color is likely already sitting in those transcripts.

There's a free download of the 5 C's on Brené's site here.

Experiment This Week: The 5 C's handoff. Before you hand off one thing this week, to a person or to AI, write one line for each C. Five lines, two minutes. Compare what comes back to what you usually get.

Last call: BuildHERS Market & Mingle is TOMORROW, August 26, in Phoenix and I'm hosting a department. Come say hi.

Party bag winner: you're getting a separate email today, so check your inbox.

Hit reply and tell me which C you've been skipping. I'll share mine and more insights next week.
